4 Reasons You are Lacking Motivation.

Before you beat yourself up, know that a lack of motivation doesn’t make you less of a person. Many people think that motivation and willpower are character strengths [or flaws if they’re lacking], but  really, we respond in predictable ways based on human nature.

Here are some reasons behind lack of motivation.

1. No Clearly Defined “Why”

Feeling like you should do something isn’t enough, you need to feel personally connected to a goal. We need to understand what will change in our life, if we do it. Ask yourself here questions:

👉🏼how will your life change?

👉🏼What new experiences will open up for you? 👉🏼How will you think, feel, or experience life differently than you do now?

2. You’re Hard-Wired to Resist Change

Even if they don’t serve you well, your established habits are comfortable and difficult to shift. We know it takes roughly 2 months to establish a new habit & sometimes that seems like forever. Our brains work for familiarity, comfort so what feels like a lack of motivation can actually be your body’s attempt at protection and self-preservation.

3. You’re Impatient

There’s nothing like results to fuel your motivation, but we have to be mindful that results take time.

4. You’re Focused on Restriction

It’s harder to stay motivated when your goals are based on what you can’t do, have or are the product of a negative mindset. Restriction is never a good idea- the rebel in us shines through (am I right?) which can lead us to focus in on what we cant have or feel like we are constantly missing out. Exercise and eating well shouldn’t be viewed as a punishment or consequent from previous actions. It hurts my nutritionist heart when people say they have to work out to burn off the extra calories from a splurge the night before, or that they have to eat very little because they overate over the holidays.
